We had our first brainstorming as a team ... and what fun we had!

We now know -
The room we'll be using,
Where we will store the supplies,
What rug we'll use for the students to sit on while they build,
The material we'll use for 'curtains' to keep our supplies under cover,
The cost to create four boards to hold what the students build, so it can be moved easily,
Placement of our BeeBot robots.
The first unit we'll be doing.
How many student groups and the time blocks they will have.
How we will sort the Legos for the students.

We created binders of the curriculum and standards provided by the vendors.

Summer time and lots of planning.

So... what did we do over the summer? We met for an afternoon to make our initial plans for implementation and spoke with the individual who will be doing our training. We wanted to get a feeling for the gentleman and if he would relate to our children - we sure think he will.

We also got our quotes and purchase orders going. As of right now, the last of our hardware has been ordered and we have two trainings in the works. One trainer will be helping us with our LittleBits equipment and the other will deliver and go over how to use our new 3D printer. We are looking forward to the arrival of the equipment and our trainers. We'll let you know what happens.

And we brainstormed ideas as to how the grant goals will flow directly into the curriculum and we think we have some great ideas... we'll let you know what our chosen lesson will be after we all meet during the first week of school.

We are so excited to use the funds from the Chris Nelson Memorial Fund
to supply our first and second grade students tools
for them to come together in a JBES Village Activities Center
where they will playfully learn through tactile, hands-on projects
that will provide them the skills to become successful lifelong learners.

Josiah Bartlett Elementary School (JBES) is a small rural K-8 school in the heart of the Mount Washington Valley in Bartlett, NH. Our school opened its doors in 1790 to 15 students and one teacher and has since grown to its current size of just under 200 students and 45 staff members. We have a full time Kindergarten, and share our amenities with a Preschool and school/public library.

We are at the cusp of a redesign of our school structure. Soon, we will become ‘villages’ of student groups; thus the name for our project - Village Activity Center. The villages will contain multi-age groupings of K-2, 3-5 and our Middle School (6-8). Our project will be specifically directed towards our younger Villagers, first and second graders.

Using hardware funds from the grant we are purchasing the Lego StoryStarter Classroom Pack,  Community Mini-figure Set, and Build Me Emotions. Supplementing this we are also getting the LittleBits STEAM and Gizmos and Gadgets Kits and a 3-D printer. Joining us will be our BeeBot robots that are already 'living' at our school.

We invite you to share in our journey.
Please share your ideas, thoughts and comments to help us make this
the BEST learning experience ever for our students.
